Hearing that your weight loss journey can be simple feels SO NICE to hear doesn't it?! So... why in the world does it not FEEL that way?

Unfortunately, the health and wellness industry can overcomplicate it BUT if you don't keep your FOCUS on the right things either — you are right alongside them overcomplicating things for yourself!

In this episode, we're talking about WHY simplicity in your workouts and nutrition is KEY and what it can look like for you!

When was the last time you heard the phrase "back to basics"?

Fitness and nutrition can get so complicated so fast when REALLY what you need focus on not just understanding, but LIVING OUT CONSISTENTLY… is the basics

So first up, WHY is simplicity so important?

Because if you master the basics, they become easy and innate.

When something is innate, it's what you fall back to when things get hard or circumstances get crazy or you travel or you "fall off" something more complicated! In essence, it becomes your BASELINE.

So what does simplicity look like?

In your fitness…

  • challenging — this doesn't just mean intensity… but trying different things and having variety in your exercises and workouts

  • adaptable — workouts that you where you're at, different lengths of time, different locations, and able to change up the what, when, where, etc without sacrificing consistency

  • consistent — ideally 4+ days a week, every week

 In your nutrition…

  • variety — all different food groups and macronutrients and not cutting things out

  • as whole as possible — more whole foods than very processed. Qhole foods to ultraprocessed is a RANGE, but having more food that's on the whole or minimally processed end than ultraprocessed is the aim!

  • consistency — always having that variety and more whole foods than super processed

When these things become your NORM they become what you fall back on when things get crazy!

And motherhood is crazy. So pick one of these "this is how you make things simple" things and stick to it for a few weeks so over TIME — it becomes just who you are and what you do!

Back slash coaching and I will see you there. So when was the last time you heard the phrase back to basics? Probably not too recently. at least when it comes to your journey, unless you're talking with me. Okay. I do say that phrase pretty often on our starting point sessions, but really fitness and nutrition can get so complicated.

So fast when really what you need to focus on. Not just understanding, but living out is consistency in the basics. So first up, why is simplicity so important? Because if you master the basics. The simple things, they become easy and innate [00:04:00] when something is innate, it's what you fall back on to when things get hard or circumstances get crazy, or you travel and you fall off or something more complicated.

Okay. It becomes your baseline. The basics become your baseline, as opposed to immediately diving into difficult things, immediately diving into a diet or an intense workout program without the simple things master. So, what does simplicity look like? I'm gonna keep it short and this is a tough of tips. So we're keeping it short today, simplicity in your fitness.

And then we're gonna talk about simplicity in your nutrition. First up in your fitness. It's challenging, adaptable and consistent. Challenging means you're pushing yourself. It doesn't just mean intensity, but you're trying different things. Pushing yourself outta your comfort zone, having a variety in your exercises and in your workouts and in the setting of your workouts, all of that being challenging.

You're adaptable. Your workouts are adaptable meeting you where you're at different lengths of [00:05:00] time, different locations able to change up the what, when, where without sacrificing this last piece of simplicity in your fitness, which is consistency, self explanatory, right? Ideally four or more days a week.

Every single. Consistent period in your nutrition, what does simplicity look like? Variety as whole as possible and consistency. You knew it. So variety means that we're looking at all different food groups and macronutrients. You're not cutting things out. You're not. Long term, not eating carbs at all, or avoiding fats.

I mean, we are taking in all the macronutrients, all of the food groups in a balanced way, you have variety in your nutrition as whole as possible. So what this means is more whole foods than those ultra processed foods, whole foods to ultra processed foods has a range. Um, there's like a couple terms in between.

But having more food that's on the whole or minimal, minimally processed end of that spectrum [00:06:00] than ultra process. That's the aim. So basically things that don't have labels, things that only have a few ingredients on the labels. That's what you're aiming for a majority of the time. And I mean, like, A big majority of the time, because those ultra processed foods, we still don't totally know how they're affecting our brains, our gut microbiome, all of that.

Not gonna get into the weeds, cuz we are keeping things simple. And when I say keeping things simple, that means as whole as possible with our food. And then last piece is just being consistent, always having that variety and always having more whole foods than super processed foods. And those are just in our moment to moment.

Yes, there will be times when you're on vacation or you're at a family's house or whatever, where you're not in full control. But if you go back to how many special days of the year there are, what percentage that is, it's under 10%, all year long, you have over 90, usually it's around 95% of the days of the year.

You have pretty, pretty high control over what you're putting in your body. So that being said tough [00:07:00] love ti right? I'm here for it. So when things become your norm, They become what you fall back on. That's why simplicity is so important because when you can master these basics, when you can keep things simple in your fitness, in your nutrition, that becomes your fallback.

It becomes your baseline. When life gets crazy and motherhood is crazy, no lie. So pick one of these. This is how you make things simple. One of these from the fitness or the nutrition and stick to it for a few weeks, that's literally picking your starting point for yourself. Cool. Will it feel like you're not gonna make progress forever maybe, but you know that image, you know, that image of a snowball rolling down a hill.

It starts super small and seems like it'll never get massive, but by the time it's at the bottom of a hill, it's like five feet in diameter and huge and could knock up an adult over. That's what this is like. That's what this simplicity in your journey is like having a starting point and then moving [00:08:00] on day by day and building on top of that.

Is the same as that snowball rolling down a hill, it's going to accumulate and exponentially change your journey. Those simple things in your fitness and nutrition will become your norm, who you are and what you fall back on. They're not diets or workout programs. They're your way of life. And that's what I want for you.

So, if you need the guidance, you can go to the tough of mom.com/coaching to get your starting point session on the books. If you don't want the guidance, I want you to go get after it with one of these six things. I'm gonna remind you of them one more time. So I want you to F focus on one, just focus on one.

This is the hardest part about a starting point is you have to just focus in on the one thing, but it's only for a few weeks until it becomes habit. In your fitness, do you need to get more challenging? AKA have variety, uh, do different things, you know, change up what you're doing, not keep doing the same thing day in and day out.

Do you need to get more adaptable with what you're doing? Meet yourself, where you're at, maybe change up the length of time. [00:09:00] or do you just need to get consistent in your nutrition? It could be variety of foods, making sure you're eating all the different food groups and getting all macronutrients in. Do you need to start changing what's in your pantry and your fridge from a lot of ultra processed foods to more whole foods or do you just need to be consistent with all of it?

Okay. I want you to pick one of those six things and that's your starting point. That's what I want you to focus on for the next few weeks. So you can finally make things simple in this journey and stop over, complicating it and get to losing weight. Get to being consistent. Get to feeling good. Okay.
